Obituary

Daniel DeWaard, 70, of Nora Springs, Iowa, passed away at home on Saturday, December 9, 2017.

Visitation services for Dan DeWaard will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Ewing Funeral Home in Britt, Iowa with memorial services following at 2:00 pm.

Dan DeWaard was born in Titonka, Iowa on June 19, 1947 to Jacob and Lorraine (Danger) DeWaard. He grew up on the family farm south of Woden and went to school at Woden Elementary. He graduated from Woden Crystal Lake High School in 1965 and went on to attend Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

In 1966, he married Paulette Alders and had two boys, Heath and Brent.

Later, he moved to California where he worked as a welder at the San Diego shipyards. During that time, he met and married Jeanne Darcy in 1975. They moved together back to Iowa, where they farmed and he later worked as a rural carrier for the US post office in Burt. They raised five children together - Jonathan, Mathew, Kate, Thomas, and James.

In 2004, Dan moved to Mason City, and later Nora Springs.

Dan was passionate about his interests. He loved politics and debate. He found comfort in his pipe and easy chair. He loved all animals, but had a special place in his heart for dogs, including several special companions. (Pedo, Chip, Leo, and Jackie) He had a keen mind and a sharp sense of humor, with a distinct and infectious laugh. He was ornery and full of strength, which he passed on to all of those around him. He was a son, a father, a grandfather, and a brother. He will be greatly missed by those that knew him.

Daniel is survived by his mother, Lorraine DeWaard of Britt; children: Heath (Kim) Lukanich of Sacramento, California, Brent (Laurie) Lukanich of North Carolina, Jonathan (Angela) DeWaard of Ames, Mathew DeWaard of Midpines, California, Kate (Matthew Estes) DeWaard Estes of Yosemite, California, Thomas (Sarah Ostrander) DeWaard of Nora Springs, and James (Sarah) DeWaard of Chaska, Minnesota; brother Dennis (Denise) DeWaard of Madison, South Dakota, and Duane (Julie) DeWaard of Wesley; grandchildren, Silis Hervey, Nathan, Joey, Alice, Delyla, Finley, Charles, Harper Raine, Peter, Sydney, Damon Nichols, Parker Nichols, and Michael Liggins; and many nieces, nephews, family members, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jacob DeWaard and granddaughter Madeleine.
