Obituary


Emma M. Colnes, 102, of Dows passed away Sunday, November 5, 2017 at Kennybrook Village in Grimes. Funeral services for Emma Colnes will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 20, 2017 at First Lutheran Church, 206 West Ellsworth Street in Dows with Pastor Zach Fischer officiating. Burial will take place at Fairview Cemetery n Dows. Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 AM prior to services at the church on Monday, November 20, 2017. Emma Mae (Reinhardt) Colnes was born May 17, 1915 in Des Moines, Iowa to Jacob Fred Reinhardt and Letta Emma (Jones) Reinhardt. Emma attended school in the Highland Park area and graduated from North High School in 1933. Emma met Edward Colnes at Blairsburg while helping out her sister and brother-in-law. They were married December 30, 1937 in Webster City. To this union were born two daughters – Carolyn and Cathleen. Emma and Eddie worked as farmhands until 1944, when they moved to Galt to start farming on their own. They continued to farm in the Galt and Dows area until 1974 when they moved into Dows. Even though Emma lost her hearing, she was always thankful she had her eyesight. Emma was a devoted wife to her beloved Eddie to whom they had almost 73 years of marriage and a devoted mother to her family. Emma loved reading and doing jumble puzzles, word-finds and crossword puzzles. Emma was a member of First Lutheran Church in Dows. Left to celebrate Emma’s life are her daughters Carolyn (Doug) Jacobsen of Dows and Cathleen Richards of Polk City, Iowa; grandchildren Julie (Cary) Halfpop and Janelle Jacobsen of Des Moines, Corey (Kim) Jacobsen of Dows, and Jennifer (Chris) Lang of Dallas, Texas; great-grandchildren Trey, Brady, and Kelby Halfpop and Ben, Matthew, and Caleb Jacobsen, and Jackson and Avery Lang; great-great-grandson Theo Halfpop; brother-in-law Elmer and Delores Kolnes of Des Moines and sisters-in-law Agnes Vik and Gudren Otteroen of Randaberg, Norway. Preceding Emma in death were her husband Edward, parents, sister Hazel, and brothers Harold, Joe, Bruce, and infant brother Max.
