Evelyn Dallman was born on December 13, 1919, in the Upper Flat area of Hancock County to Peter and Annie Hanson.  Her grandparents Martin and Carrie Larson were Hancock County pioneers.

Evelyn attended country schools in the Upper Flat area and graduated from Crystal Lake High School before attending Waldorf College and Iowa State Teachers College (UNI).  She taught in rural schools near her home before teaching school in Rockwell and Hampton.  While teaching in Hampton, she married her husband, Lyle Dallman, who was home on leave from World War II, in 1945.  They were married 56 years.

Evelyn attended the Upper Flat Evangelical Free Church, built on her grandparent’s farm, until her marriage when she attended the Evangelical Free Church in Britt.

Lyle and Evelyn had five children and farmed in Orthel Township until moving to their home in Britt in 1963.  After her children were in school, Evelyn went back to teaching in 1960, one year in Kanawha and the rest in Britt.  Evelyn taught 1st grade most of her career because she loved to teach kids to read.

She retired from full-time teaching when she was 65 but continued teaching on a part-time basis well into her 80’s.  Even though she could not speak Spanish, she taught English to many Spanish speaking kids.

Evelyn loved to garden and make quilts, and she was an enthusiastic supporter of the West Hancock Eagles and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Danita; her son Timothy with wife, Linda, and granddaughters Kerrie and Lori; her son Peter with wife, Francie, and granddaughters Kaitlin and Chelsea; her son Brian with grandson Mathew, and granddaughter Anna; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death her parents, brothers, and sisters; her husband Lyle; her son David; her daughter-in-law Cindy; and her granddaughter Rachel.
