Obituary


Gerd Henken, 73, of Crystal Lake passed away Tuesday, June 19 2001 at North Iowa Mercy Health Care Center in Mason City.

Gerd, the son of Fred and Della (Spear) Henken was born on October 25, 1927 at Titonka, Iowa. He was inducted into the United States Army in December of 1950 and served his country until December of  1952.

Gerd married Dorothy Cooper in February of 1954.  He was married to Betty Hauptly in September of 1971.  Gerd was employed at Winnebago Industries and Allied Construction until his retirement.

Gerd attended St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt.  He was a member of the American Legion Post of Crystal Lake and was a past commander of the Garner V.F.W.  He enjoyed fishing and playing in Cribbage Tournaments with his friends.

Gerd is survived by his special friend, Emily Benson of Crystal Lake; three sons: Greg and his wife, Denise of Forest City, Michael and his wife, Karen of Le Center, Minnesota, Scott and his wife, Theresa of Truman, Minnesota; three daughters: Valerie Swensen of St. Peter, Minnesota, Crystal Henken of Le Center, Minnesota, Tammy Schnider and her husband, Gary of Le Suer, Minnesota; twelve grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters: Gladys Kirschbaum of Crystal Lake, Katherine and her husband LuVerne Helland of Sun Lake, Arizona, and one sister-in-law, Janice Henken of Crystal Lake.

Gerd is preceded in death by his parents, two wives, Betty and Dorothy, one brother, Fred Jr. , and sister, Ruth Wheeler, two brothers-in-law: Harold Wheeler and Vincent Kirschbaum.
