LaVerne Gustav, son of John and Carrie (Berhow) Romsey, was born on April 7, 1920 in Story County on the family farm. Gus attended school in Gilbert through 8th grade. After school, he worked on the farm until he joined the Army. Gus served in the Army for 3 ½ years, serving in Italy, France, Germany and England, where he met up with his brother Tom in London before Tom was killed in action. He returned back home in 1945 and settled in Roland where he continued to farm.

Upon returning home from the service, Gus met Colleen Olson on Christmas Eve. On June 11, 1947, Gus was united in marriage with Colleen in Story City. The couple made their home on a farm near Eagle Grove and later in the Holmes and Goldfield areas. The couple was blessed with four children; Tom, Randy, Nina, and Mike.

Gus was a determined and hard worker. Even after retiring from farming, he was never fully retired. He enjoyed keeping busy with various handyman projects. Most importantly, Gus loved spending time with his family and friends.

Gus is survived by his wife Colleen Romsey of Clarion; son Tom Romsey of Clarion; daughter Nina (Bob) Wright of Forsyth, Illinois; son Mike Romsey of Kapaau, Hawaii; 7 grandchildren: Tron Wright, Brandon Wright, Ryan (Grace) Romsey, Brody Romsey, Tarin (Sam) Mills, Holly (Dave) Birky, and Beau (Cami) Barclay; 14 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; sister Millie Olson of Story City; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son Randy in 1990; 6 siblings; and grandparents.
