Obituary


Lena Harringa, 90, died Friday, January 18, 2002 at Westview Care Center in Britt.

Lena Harringa was born August 25, 1902 to Bruno and Engelena (Troff) Bruns at Bundee, Germany.  On May 6, 1903, they immigrated to the United States and settled near Titonka, Iowa.  She attended rural school.  She was a member of the Ramsey Reformed Church, rural Titonka.

On October 8, 1924 she was married to John Harringa.  They lived on the farm North of Ramsey Reformed Church until 1942 when they moved to a farm southeast of Woden.  In 1948 they moved north of Wesley where they farmed until John's death in October of 1952.  In 1955 Lena moved to Britt where she was employed in housekeeping at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1967.  After her retirement, she cared for elderly people in their homes.  She loved gardening and flowers and caring for her home.  She enjoyed needlework, crocheting and tatting.  In December of 1994, she moved to Westview Care Center.

She was blessed with six children, twenty-five grandchildren, fifty-one great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Lena is survived by all six of her children, Magdalene Penning and her husband, Robert of Algona, Leona Peters and her husband, Harry of Britt, Clarence Harringa and his wife, Marge of Britt, Deloris Eekhoff and her husband, Harlan of Britt, Shirley Gail of Clear Lake; one sister Tressie Beenken of Buffalo Center; sister-in-law Francis Bruns of Britt; and brother-in-law Ed Stohr of Garner.

She was preceded in death by her husband John, two great grandchildren, Ryan Johnson and Jordan Johnson, and five sisters and three brothers.
