Obituary

Lorraine DeWaard, 91, of Britt passed Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at the Muse Norris Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services for Lorraine DeWaard will be held Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Woden Christian Reformed Church, 205 290th Street rural Woden.  Burial will be at the Woden Christian Reformed Cemetery in Woden.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Lorraine Elizabeth Helen (Danger) DeWaard was born September 14, 1926 in Alden to Fred and Helen (Hartkopp) Danger.  Lorraine grew up in the Mason City area and graduated from Mason City High School with the class of 1945.

During high school and shortly after, Lorraine was employed as a sales clerk at the Montgomery Ward department store in Mason City.  It was here while working in the shoe department that she met Jacob DeWaard, the love of her life.

Lorraine and Jacob were united in marriage on February 20, 1946 at St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City and made their home on a farm south of Woden, where they raised their three sons.

Lorraine worked for Rueben’s Department Store in Forest City, later Fowser’s Department Store, for a total of 20 years.  She worked as a sales clerk and designed window displays in the store.

In 1987, Lorraine and Jacob moved from the farm to Titonka, where they resided until moving to the Summit House in Britt in 2008.  In 2016, she became a resident of the Westview Care Center.

Lorraine loved the Lord and her greatest desire was for her children and grandchildren to love Him also.  She was an active member of the Woden Christian Reformed Church for 72 years, having served as a Sunday School teacher, as a member of the choir, and in the church Ladies’ Aid group.  Lorraine and Jacob were very active in the Right to Life and Country Cousins ministry, which provided much needed supplies to the less fortunate.

Lorraine was known for her gift of hospitality. Her door was always open and no one left hungry. She also loved spending time with her family.

Lorraine is survived by her children Dennis (Denise) DeWaard of Madison, South Dakota and Duane (Julie) DeWaard of Wesley, Iowa; grandchildren Jacob Lukanich, Brent Lukanich, Nicole Savage, Jonathan DeWaard, Mathew DeWaard, Benjamin DeWaard, Katherine DeWaard Estes, Elizabeth Rigby, Thomas DeWaard, Cassie Reed, James DeWaard, Aaron DeWaard and Emily Lewis; 26 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law Josie and Henry DeWaard of Kanawha, and brother Fred Danger Jr. of Manly; along with numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jacob in 2010, son Daniel in 2017, grandson Lucas DeWaard in 2011, and great-granddaughter Madeleine DeWaard  in 2009.
