Obituary


Lydia (Stohr) Hillenga, 105, of Woden, passed away Sunday, October 5, 2014, at the Kanawha Community Home in Kanawha.

Funeral services for Lydia Hillenga will be held on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at 1:30 PM at Woden Christian Reformed Church in rural Woden with Pastor Harrison Harnden officiating.  Burial will be at the Woden Christian Reformed Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 from 5-7 PM at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West, in Britt and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Lydia Hillenga, daughter of Eggo and Etta (Eden) Stohr, was born on May 21, 1909 northwest of Woden in Winnebago County. She was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Titonka. She received her education at the rural school in Grant Township.

On February 22, 1931 she was united in marriage to Harm Hillenga, the wedding took place in Titonka.  The couple established their home on a farm south of Woden.  The home was blessed with three children, two sons and one daughter.

She served as a Sunday school teacher at the Woden Christian Reformed Church and was also a member of the Ladies Aid for many years.  She helped a lot people, especially senior citizens, in Woden and made many quilts and bedspreads for her children and grandchildren.

Lydia is survived by her children: Marlin (Sheri) Hillenga of California, Stella (Harold) Hayungs of Britt, and Marvin Hillenga of Britt; ten grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lydia was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harm Hillenga on April 21, 1964, one granddaughter, one great granddaughter, four sisters, two brothers, one daughter-in-law, one granddaughter-in-law, one grandson-in-law.
