Marjorie Ruth Loats was born on April 16, 1924 to Andrew and Lena (Steenblock) Loats in Belmond where she graduated in 1942. She was the drum majorette with the high school band that won national championship honors her senior year.

She married Robert Larson in 1949 and raised daughters Valerie and Polly.

Marjorie sang in a quartet that performed at local events and on a radio show in the late 1950s.

Marjorie worked for the Dows Reporter as a lineotype operator in the 1960s. In 1970 she became the Dows School principal’s secretary where she kept a motherly watchful eye over the students. She retired in 1980.

She and Robert loved golf, fishing trips to Minnesota, and traveling to Washington to visit daughter Valerie and family. She enjoyed sports; faithfully attending and cheering on Dows football and basketball games and from the armchair Iowa and Iowa State teams. She was a friend to all animals, feeding them and watching out the windows. She had a special fondness for cats.

Marjorie was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church of Dows where she played the organ for 40+ years and served however she was needed: Deacon, Elder, Sunday school teacher and sewing blankets to name a few.

Marjorie is survived by her daughter Polly Eide (Cecil Poyner) of Cedar Falls, IA; son-in-law USNR CAPT Retired John Kittell of Bremerton, WA; grandsons USAF Maj Retired Robert (Heather) Kittell of Centennial, CO and John (Barbara) Kittell of Bainbridge Island, WA; three great-grandchildren Brooke, Andrew, and Allison; and many nieces and nephews.
