Obituary


Merle M. Anderson, 75, of Clarion passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion. According to Merle’s wishes, his body was donated to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program for use in medical research and education. A memorial gathering will take place at a later date. Merle M. Anderson was born on August 11, 1942 in Belmond to Jess and Anne (Cronin) Anderson. He was raised and educated in Belmond. Merle served with the Army National Guard Company C 747 Maintenance Battalion in Eagle Grove for more than 23 years. During his career with the National Guard, Merle served on the security detail for Pope John Paul II’s visit to Living History Farms in 1979. Merle was employed by the city of Clarion, managed the local Yohn’s Redi-Mix location and worked for the Wright County Highway Department for more than 20 years before his retirement. Merle was a longtime member of the Clarion Volunteer Fire Department. He also was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman. He was a lifetime member of the North American Hunting and Fishing Club. He enjoyed playing cards and was a friend of many in the community. Merle is survived by his sons, Gail (Sherry) Anderson of Latimer, Kyle (Andrea Chapman) Anderson of Kansas City and Joel (Jill) Anderson of Elm Creek, Nebraska; grandchildren Darrick, Jesse, Caleb, Devon, Dillon, Isaac and Ashlyn; five great-grandchildren; sister Lois Sheets; along with numerous extended family and friends. Merle was preceded in death by his parents and several siblings, infant daughter, Dorothy Anderson, and grandson, Derrick T. Anderson.
