Terry Smith Hudspeth, the son of Worth and Katherine Hudspeth, was born September 9, 1944 in Gilroy, California. He attended grade school in Elmore, Minnesota and graduated from Bishop Garrigan High School in 1962.

Terry served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the Destroyer USS Ault DD 698. He knew his service time down to the minute; three years, nine months, ten days, nine hours, and sixteen minutes.

Terry took classes at Iowa Lakes Community College. He gives credit to his wife, Kaylene, for his academic excellence.

Terry married Kaylene Reimers on February 14, 1974 in Webster City, Iowa. To this union, they were blessed with three well-behaved children: Kerry Patrick, Katherine Joèl, and Scott Terrance.

In 1974, the couple moved to St. Benedict, Iowa. Terry managed the Standard Oil Fertilizer Company in Corwith, Iowa. In 1978, they built their home in Britt. They purchased Gibney Oil Company and changed the name to Hudspeth Oil Company. Terry ran the tank wagon, and Kaylene did all of the bookkeeping from an office in their home. Terry received many awards for his outstanding fuel and oil sales with Standard Oil. They sold Hudspeth Oil Company to the Britt Co-op in 1992.

Terry and Kaylene moved to Mason City in 1998 and resided there until Terry’s retirement from his guard position at the Social Security Administration. At that time, they moved to their lake home on Tuttle Lake, which they had purchased in 1992.

Terry served on the Britt City Council and was a member of the Britt Lions Club. He enjoyed golfing and playing cards with his cronies at the Hob Nob. Terry also enjoyed hunting, although 90% of the time, he never actually left the house with a gun and ended up at the Legion.

Terry loved to spend time with family and friends at the casino. He kept the lights on and donated to their electric bill. Occasionally, he would brag about winning a “big one." We all know that even if he had won the “big one," he still had maybe broken even all together. We played along and let him believe he had beat the casino.

Terry loved teasing and spending time with his children and grandchildren. His grandchildren know him as Papa T. Terry liked his quiet lake days looking at the lake and watching the vines grow. He made sure he always had plenty of jelly for the Orioles. A lot of time at the lake was spent tinkering. Occasionally, he would enjoy some B.V.

Terry’s brothers and sisters, as kids, named him Brownie because he would always wait by his mother’s oven for the baked goods.

Terry will be remembered as a great husband, brother, father, grandfather, and son, and also for swearing too much! He always said if God didn’t let him in for that reason, then we are all going elsewhere.

Left to cherish his memory are his three children: Kerry Hudspeth (Janelle Wieland), Katherine (Jason) Douglas, and Scott Hudspeth (Beth Weiss) all of Britt. He is also survived by eight granddaughters and two grandsons: Darielle, Kaylee, Sydney, and Ryleigh Hudspeth; Caden, Courtney, Camryn, and Carson Douglas; Mykella and Crystal Hudspeth, and also his dog Rowdy the 2nd.

He also leaves behind four brothers: Bill, Bud, Tom, and Dennis, and three sisters: Pat, Betty, and Joyce.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Worth and Katherine Hudspeth; his wife, Kaylene, a brother, Bob Hudspeth; a niece, Tracy Hudspeth; his father-in-law, Arthur Reimers; and his favorite dog Rowdy.
