Obituary


Alred Peter Assink, 69, passed away Tuesday, February 8, 1994, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, Iowa.

Alfred, the son of Ben and Anna (Smidt) Assink, was born January 24, 1925, at Body, Montana.  He moved with his parents at an early age to Kanawha, where he received his education.  In 1943, he entered the U.S. Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Silver Star.  In 1945, following his discharge he returned to Kanawha.

He was united in marriage to Genelle Ruter on August 14, 1947, at Kanawha.  Alfred was a carpenter and electrician employed by Evans Lumber in Clarion for many years.

He was a member of the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church and the Kanawha American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Genelle, Kanawha, Iowa; a daughter, Sonja and her husband, Bill Goetz, Forest City, Iowa; a son, Merlyn and his wife, Barbara Assink, Kanawha, Iowa; and three grandchildren: Matthew, Brandon, and Angela Assink, Kanawha, Iowa; a sister, Helen and her husband, Don Van Wyngarden, Pella, Iowa; two brothers: George and his wife, Rose Assink, Corwith, Iowa; and Alvin Assink, Corona, California.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Henry and Harlan.
