Obituary


Arlen Scott Killius, 74, of Chandler, Arizona, and formerly of Belmond, passed away on Friday, January 26, 2024 at his home following a short bout with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Belmond United Methodist Church, 1031 1st Street Southeast in Belmond, with Pastor Leila Blackburn officiating. Burial will take place in Belmond Cemetery. Scott's funeral service will be live streamed on the Church's Facebook page.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.

Arlen Scott Killius was born on May 17, 1949, at Mason City, Iowa to Cecil Laverne Killius and Pearl Rose (Pfister) Killius. He had 5 siblings – Audrey, Nicki, Jim, Barbara and Sherman. He attended Belmond Community Schools for his entire education except his sophomore year was spent in Clarion. He graduated in 1967. In 1969 he found employment at Winnebago Industries in Forest City, Iowa, working on the line installing dashboards then moving to warehouse foreman. In 1971 Winnebago implemented their own in-house security force. Scott was accepted to a security position and went on to complete many types of training including K-9.

On June 19, 1971, he was united in marriage to Wendy Joyce Haugen of Dows, Iowa.  In 1973, Scott went to work for the City of Belmond as a police officer and worked there until 1976 when Wendy’s job was relocated to Ames, Iowa.  Scott then found employment as a security officer at the Woodward State Hospital-School at Woodward, Iowa. Scott and Wendy resided in Ames until 1985 when they decided to move to Arizona. In 1985, Scott went to work for American Express as a corporate security officer until 2001 when American Express contracted their security to Pinkerton. Scott then obtained a security guard position with Casino Arizona and worked there until his retirement in December 2011. Scott enjoyed hunting in Tyrrell’s Grove and fishing in Wall Lake, Little Wall Lake and Lake Cornelia while living in Iowa and had fun fishing in the city lakes while living in Arizona.

In 1988 Scott and Wendy purchased a home in Chandler, AZ. As Scott and Wendy had no children, they gradually become the neighborhood adopted grandparents to many children on their street.

Scott is preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Pearl, step mother, Evelyn, sisters Audrey and Barbara, infant brother, Sherman and father-in-law Harold Haugen.

Scott is survived by his wife Wendy, sister Nicki Weatherman and brother Jim (Denise) Killius, mother-in-law Grace Haugen, Sisters-in-law Ila Haugen and Laura (Barry Manz) Haugen, brothers-in-law John Haugen, Jim (Mary) Haugen, Joe (Elaine) Haugen, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews in both the Killius and Haugen families and the adopted Arizona families of Todtenbier, Clevenger, Merket, Morrow and Cockrell.
