Obituary

Arnold “Greek” Barkema, age 96, of Belmond, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2014, at Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.

Arnold, the son of Dick and Minnie Pals Barkema, was born Feb. 27, 1918, on the family farm northeast of Belmond. He attended country school No. 2. Arnold grew up working with his father and brothers on the farm. Soon to become known as “Greek”, farming became his chosen occupation.
Greek was united to Alice Sorenson, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, on Feb. 5, 1954. The couple made their home on a farm southeast of Belmond. In 1980, Greek and Alice built a home on the Belmond Golf Course. Alice passed away in 2006, and Greek continued to live on the golf course. He had just in the past years entered the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.
Greek was a lifelong member of the Immanuel Reformed Church east of Belmond. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brothers. Greek was a completely self-taught golfer. His golf swing, Greek would brag, was the most often pursued style in the PGA Tour.
Arnold “Greek” is survived by his son, Richard (Cec) Peddicord of Belmond, three grandchildren, Annette Hargadine (Sam) of Iowa City, Tammy Schimp (Mike) of Hampton, Mitchell Peddicord from Kansas City, Mo., great-grandchildren, Bryce and Molly Schimp of Hampton, two sisters, Esther Dorenkamp of Mason City, Amelia Guth of Meservey, brother, Dick, Jr. of Goodell, and numerous other, brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Alice in 2006, three sisters and three brothers.
