Bernard Pannkuk passed away on July 3, 2020 at the Westview Care Center in Britt
at the age of 96. Bernard was born June 11, 1924 in German Valley, Iowa to Boyd
B. and Gesena (Boelts) Pannkuk. He was the third of six children.
A private graveside service with military honors will be held at Evergreen
Cemetery in Britt. A Celebration of Bernard's Life is being planned for a later
date.
Bernard attended country school near German Valley through the 8th grade. He
worked as a farmhand for local farmers until joining the Army in January 1943.
He was stationed in California for training until he was sent to Europe in
August of 1943 with the 458th Ordnance Evacuation Company. He served in England,
France, Belgium and Germany during World War II. He took great pride in the 2
years and 300 days that he served his country. He received an honorable
discharge in November of 1945 with 5 Bronze Stars. After his discharge from the
service, Bernard returned to the Titonka area where he worked for Bradley
Brothers, Schutjer Implement, and as a truck driver and carpenter.
On September 12, 1947 Bernard married LuElla Holtorf at Immanuel Lutheran Church
in Titonka, Iowa. They started farming north of Woden in 1951. In 1952, they
moved north of Britt and continued farming. Bernard's love of farming, milking
cows, and raising hogs ended in 2016 when his health forced him to retire at the
age of 92.
Over the years, Bernard was on the Britt Coop Elevator Board and served one year
as its president, was a trustee for Britt Township, and belonged to the American
Legion and VFW Posts in Britt. He also served on the Hancock County Pork
Producers Board, worked with the Dissolution Committee for the Britt Creamery,
and was a member of the First Lutheran Church.
Bernard was always willing to lend a helping hand to family, friends, neighbors
or even a stranger in need. Over the years, Bernard and LuElla enjoyed traveling
and going on fishing trips to Canada with family and friends. Bernard also
looked forward to attending the Army reunions that were held around the country
to reconnect with his Army buddies. For 20 years, Bernard and LuElla were able
to enjoy winters at their home in Pharr, Texas.
Bernard is survived by his children, Dennis (Jill) Pannkuk of Clear Lake and
Diane (Rayneal) McKim of Altoona; grandchildren Matt (Paulina Poplawska)
Pannkuk, Amy (Ross) Hughes and their daughter Emma, Josh Pannkuk, Michael McKim
and his children Breanna, Zoe and Alicia, Stacey McKim, and Molly (Mike)
