Obituary


Bernice Lenore Asbe, 81, of Kanawha, Iowa passed away Saturday, September 9, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital in Clarion, Iowa.

Bernice, the daughter of David and Ollie (Sloter) Gilbert was born July 6, 1919 near Buffalo Center.  She received her education in country schools in Winnebago County.

She was united in marriage with Merle Ashe on May 14, 1942 at Princeton, Missouri.  Bernice and her husband farmed in the Kanawha area.  Following her husband's death on May 8, 1974, she continued to live on the farm.

Bernice was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and was an active member of the Lutheran Church, including Ladies Aid and Circle.  She was a member and took an active part in the American Legion Auxiliary for 21 years, being secretary at the county and local level.  She was also Sergeant of Arms for many years.  She was a member of a birthday club and a card club.  She was also a member of a country club for many years.  She was a precinct worker at various election polls for many years.  Bernice enjoyed life and people, and one of her favorite past times was going on bus tours.

Bernice is survived by two sons: Gilbert and his wife, Karen of Williamsburg and Duane of Clarion; four grandchildren Doug Asbe, Angela Holmes and her husband, Jeff, Alece Asbe, and Aria Asbe; two great-grandchildren Tyler and Breanna Asbe; one sister Lucille Proctor and her husband, Lynn of Cresco; two brothers Bob Gilbert of Lake Mills and Albert Gilber and his wife, Lorene of Klemme; two sisters-in-law Rusty Gilbert of Ottumwa and Gladys Shumway of Des Moines, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Merle, and one brother, Harry Gilbert.
