Obituary


Carol L. Okland, 82, of Waterloo and formerly of Dows, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014, at Country View Nursing Home in Waterloo.

Carol Lavonne was born on June 22, 1932, to Leonard and Beulah Phipps Walters in Boone. Carol was raised on a farm outside of Boone and graduated from Boone High School in 1950.

Carol married Marlowe Dean Okland on June 22, 1952, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived in rural Huxley until moving to their farm south of Dows in 1953. They were blessed with four daughters. Carol was a farm wife and homemaker. Carol attended Ellsworth Community College where she earned an associate’s degree. Carol worked for the Department of Human Services for the state of Iowa.

Carol moved to Marshalltown in 1977 to be close to her husband, who had a severe stroke and was in the Iowa Veterans Home. Upon Marlowe’s death, Carol retired and moved to Ames in 1986.

Carol was a member of First Lutheran Church in Dows and also was in Ladies Aid Club.

Those left to cherish her memories are her daughters Debra (Ron) Schulte-Gaasch, of Pacific Grove, Calif., Sharon Okland, of Ames, and Karen (Mervin) Carnahan, of Cedar Falls; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Chris) Taranto, Jill Kirstein, Nichole (Jay) Malin, Alisha (Mark) Mayfield, John (Melody) Schulte, Joe (Leslie) Schulte, Jenna Askay and Leah Ackerman; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Marlene Kirstein; four brothers, Bob, Don, Pete and Jerry Walters; and one infant granddaughter, Summer Schulte.
