Catherine Jean (Cosgriff) Devine was born July 2, 1926 to Edward and Gladys (Bailey) Cosgriff in Britt, Iowa.  She was raised and educated in Britt, graduating from Britt High School.

Following high school, Catherine worked for a time in Des Moines before working at Mullens Seeds in Britt as a bookkeeper.  It was during that time, while serving as President of RYP (Rural Young People), that she met James M. Devine.  Jim served in the United States Army during the Korean War, and shortly after returning home, the couple were engaged.  They were married on February 14, 1953 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Corwith.

Jim and Catherine lived on several farms before building their new home in 1979, near Corwith where they continued to make their home until the present day.  The couple was blessed with sons Jim, Jr., Tom and Dave and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary just prior to Jim’s death in 2013.

In addition to raising the family, Catherine was the wife of a farmer, helping in every aspect of the farming operation.  Her true passion was music, a gift she had cultivated from an early age, and she shared that with countless area children with piano lessons.

Catherine was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Corwith, then later, St. John’s Catholic Church in Clarion.  She was active in church choir and played organ for 50 years.  She also was the pianist for Grace Notes, a ladies quartet alongside Pat Hartwig, Joann Peters, Rowena Coles and Sue Legge for more than 5 years.

Besides her love of music, she kept a flower garden and played golf in the summer months.  Mostly, she enjoyed spending time with her sons, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Catherine is survived by her sons, Jim (Deb) Devine of Corwith, Tom (Erma Peria) Devine of Ames and Dave Devine of Corwith; grandchildren Rachel (Jerod) Christopher (Julie) and Timothy (Susan); great-grandchildren Haydon Storck, Hunter Storck, Kenzie Devine, Madison Devine, Bentley Devine, Jared Hutson, Jonas Hutson, Jesse Hutson and Jayden Devine; brother-in-law Steve Devine; along with numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim, daughter-in-law Renee, and siblings Carol Rasmussen, Paul Cosgriff and Ken Cosgriff.

In lieu of flowers, Catherine’s family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the West Hancock Band Activity Account or to Hospice of North Iowa.
