Charles "Chuck" L. Smith

Charles “Chuck” Smith, 95 of Britt, passed away Thursday, December 13, 2018 at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt. Memorial services for Chuck Smith will be held on Monday, December 17, 2018 at 10:30 AM at the United Methodist Church, 707 4^th Street Southwest in Britt, with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Visitation for Chuck will be held on Sunday, December 16, 2018 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West in Britt and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church. Charles Cecil Smith was born on October 7, 1923 to Charles “Floyd” and Icyle (Hull) Smith in Omaha, Nebraska. He and his sister, Phyllis, grew up in southern Iowa until his family moved north and eventually settled in the Britt area, where he graduated with the Class of 1941. Following graduation, Chuck farmed with his father. He married his high school sweetheart, Arlene Joy “Jo” Hildebrand on August 18, 1946. They raised three daughters while farming. Jo passed away on October 16, 1989. Chuck was remarried in 1992 to Dorothy (Nelson) Weiland Smith. Chuck enjoyed his 30+ years of fishing trips to Canada and cherished his road trip to Alaska. He also wintered in Weslaco, Texas. He enjoyed being a member of the Silver Stars Card Club. He was involved in a local bowling league, served on the board of the REC, and was on the Britt Farmer’s Co-op Board. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer and as an usher. He was also a member of The Odd Fellows and Rebekah Lodges. Chuck enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and assembling model air planes. He had a large collection of hats, many of which were given to him by loved ones. Charles is survived by his daughters Connie Root, Cathy (Lino) Padilla, and Carmen Smith; grandchildren Maggie (Karl) DeMunda, Duane (Paula) Smith, Selina Padilla, and Ricky (Tana) Padilla; great-grandchildren Wynter and Jaden DeMunda, Shauna, Jennifer, and Amber Smith, and Addison and Gable Padilla; step-children Darrell (Jeanene) Weiland, Larry (the late Terri) Weiland, and Esta (Dennis) Reyerson; brother-in-law Bob Korneisel; sisters-in-law Sandy (Jim) Jennings and Carol Hildebrand; cousin Gail Parker; and many nieces, nephews, family members, and friends. Chuck is preceded in death by his parents, wife Jo in 1989, wife Dorothy in 2011, great-grandson Abner Dean Padilla, and sister Phyllis Korneisel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to Hospice of North Iowa, Hancock County Memorial Hospital, or the United Methodist Church in Britt, Iowa.
