Chloe V. Smith, age 87, of Rowan passed away Friday, January 9, 2015 at the Iowa
Specialty Hospital in Belmond.
Chloe Valois, the daughter of Earl and Carrie Hiams Hammond, was born October
16, 1927 in Sheridan, WY. After the death of her mother, Chloe, sisters and
father, moved to Rowan. It was in Rowan, she grew up and attended school. Chloe
graduated from Rowan High School in 1945. She then attended Iowa State
University in Ames, where Chloe would graduate with a Degree in Education. After
college, Chloe taught Home Economics in area high schools.
Chloe was united in marriage to Marvin Smith on June 20, 1952 at the Little
Brown Church in Nashua. The couple made their home in the Rowan area for several
years, and were blessed with five children. After the children had graduated
from high school, Chloe and Marvin went on a late life adventure. They sold
everything in Iowa and moved to a ranch in the beautiful mountain country of
Wyoming. They lived and worked their for eighteen years, before returning to
Rowan in 2001. Chloe was an avid gardener, who was definitely a product of the
outdoor life. In her garden she would grow sweet corn, beets and numerous other
products to shave member of the with family and friends. Chloe was a member of
the "Come Join Us" Club, Weaver's Guild of North Iowa, and an active member of
the United Church of Rowan.
Chloe is survived by her husband of over sixty years, Marvin, children, Kerri Jo
Eivens of Rowan, Linda (Scott) Lunning of Mason City, Carl (Sharon) of Dows, Dan
"Boone" of Rowan, Tim (Deanne) of Clarion, grandchildren, Roslind (Doug)
Gustafson, Debbie Bock, Riea (Earl) Searcy, Diane (Chris) Bock, Ben Morford, Joe
Morford, sisters and brothers-in-law, Hope McLaughlin of Eugene, OR, Audrey
(Elmer) Wirtz of Dows, Janice (Harry) Bryant of Lincoln, AR, Alice (John) Brook
of Warsaw, MO, and numerous other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, step-mother, Susan
