Clarice H. (Carlson) Thompson
Clarice H. Thompson, 94, of Clarion, Iowa, passed away July 6, 2011, at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond, Iowa.
Funeral services for Clarice Thompson will be held on Monday, July 11, 2011, at 10:00 am at Holmes Lutheran Church in Holmes with Pastors Dennis Dorenkamp and Richard Taylor officiating. Burial will be at Holmes Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Sunday, July 10, 2011, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at Ewing Funeral Home, 602 North Main Street, in Clarion, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Clarice Harriet Carlson, daughter of Ole and Bertha (Ogland) Carlson, was born December 2, 1916, at Kanawha, Iowa. She was baptized in the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kanawha, Iowa, and also attended school in Norway Township.
Clarice married Burdette Thompson on November 22, 1941, in the bride’s home. Together they raised three daughters in Clarion.
Clarice had been a member of Holmes Lutheran Church since 1926 (84 years). She enjoyed serving in many areas during her time there, including playing in the string band, singing in the church choir, teaching Sunday School, serving as a member of Holmes Circle for many years, and participating in Luther League.
She also encouraged her daughters’ by supporting their many 4-H activities over the years. Clarice was an avid gardener. In her later years, she loved uncovering hidden treasures at local auctions and antique stores.
Clarice is survived by her daughters: Charlotte (Chuck) Kern of Clarion, Iowa, Elaine (Fred) Hollaus of Redlands, California and Helen (Dennis) Dorenkamp of Peoria, Arizona; eight grandchildren: Angela (Shawn) Brown, Chad (Karla) Kern, Dana (Kyle) Campbell, Lora (Jason) Bowman, Brent Dorenkamp, Clinton (Jennifer) Dorenkamp, Kristine (Ryan) Klima and, Rachel (B.K.) Grayson; thirteen great-grandchildren: Norah Brown, Brayden and Caleb Kern, Emma and Maddie Bowman, Gabriel, Gavin and Makel Klima, Avery Dorenkamp and Ethan LaBounty, and Owen Grayson; and sister Ruby McCormick.
Clarice was preceded in death by her husband Burdette; and siblings Hilma Thompson, Tilman Carlson, Myra Birkland, Eleanor Jacobsen, Birdsell Carlson, Shirley Olson, Gordon Carlson, and Robert Carlson.
