Obituary


Cleo Lucille (Engle) Kent, 92, passed away on May 2, 2021 at the Iowa Specialty Hospital in Belmond, Iowa following a short battle with pneumonia.

A graveside service will be held Friday, May 7th, 1:00 PM, at the Corydon Cemetery in Corydon, Iowa. 

Memorials may be directed to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Iowa, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or the donor’s choice.

Cleo was born on August 4, 1928 to Samuel and Elizabeth (Nickel) Engle in rural Corydon.  She graduated from Corydon High School in 1946.  Cleo was united in marriage to Donald Kent of Promise City, Iowa on September 10, 1950 in Corydon.  To this union three children were born.

The couple moved to Eddyville, Iowa in 1962 where Don continued his teaching career and Cleo raised their family.  In addition, she provided day care for many local children.  Cleo and Don were faithful and active members of the Eddyville United Methodist Church.  The couple enjoyed camping, traveling, and participating in craft shows.

Following Don’s death in 1994, Cleo became involved in the congregate meal program and enjoyed the fellowship of her friends.  In 2015, she moved into the Belmond Community Apartments where she made many new friends through congregate meals, playing cards and bingo, and putting puzzles together.  Cleo was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who greatly enjoyed family gatherings.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald; three brothers, Lewis, Joe, and Doyle Engle, three sisters, Avis Baber, Ilo Morse, and Elo Reynolds, and their spouses; and brother-in-law, Maurice Kent.

She is survived by sons, Gary (Connie), Bill (Carolyn), and daughter, Barb (Steve) Soma; grandchildren, Andrew (Madeline) Kent, Julie Kent, Ryan (Sara) Kent, Adam (Dana) Kent, Brad (Paige) Soma, Amy (Ryan) Murray; great-grandchildren, Penelope Kent, Madelyn and Tyler Kent, Mia and Isaac Soma, and Rowan Murray.  Also, she is survived by in-laws, David and Dona Kent, and Margaret Kent, as well as many nieces and nephews.
