Clifford Lee Smith was born April 16, 1930 to George Earl and Emily May
(Aitchison) Smith in Stilson, Iowa.
Cliff enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951 and served during the
Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to work at the
Hawley Garage in Mason City, working as a mechanic as he did prior to his time
in the military.
Cliff was united in marriage to Eileen Lewerke on November 16, 1951. The couple
made their home in Mason City for a time, before moving to Minneapolis where
Cliff was employed by the Chrysler Corporation as a regional troubleshooter.
This career change brought with it extensive traveling across the country.
Later, Cliff and Eileen moved their young family to Britt, where he was employed
by Britt Tech, serving as Vice President of Manufacturing. Again, this position
required travel and also brought many visitors from around the globe to the
Smith home for dinners. Cliff later worked as a salesman for NACHURS Fertilizer,
retiring at the age of 83.
Cliff is remembered for his fierce determination, strong work ethic and his
passionate pursuit of perfection. He was known to be the person that people
called on when they were in their time of need and he expressed his love of
others through his service and sacrifice.
Cliff was a longtime member of the Britt Rotary Club. He enjoyed golfing,
bowling, throwing horseshoes at family reunions, fishing trips with his
brothers-in-law to Canada, traveling with Eileen, eating ice cream and driving
as fast as he could get by with.
Cliff was a dedicated member of Bethel Baptist Church in Britt, where he served
the youth as an Awana leader for many years, and he lived his faith as a Gideon.
Cliff is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Eileen, of Britt; daughters
Kay Brooks and her husband, Ron, and Jo Miller and her husband, Matthew;
grandchildren Alyssa (Tim) Hahn, Adam (Alexandria) Allen, Jacob Miller, Grace
Miller and Benjamin Miller; great-grandchildren CJ Allen, Lane Allen, Kaci Allen
and Riker Allen; along with other extended family members and friends.
Cliff is preceded in death by his parents, siblings Calvin Smith, Carol Nelson,
Marian Fikse and Allen Smith.
