Obituary

Danny Lee Aldrich, 88, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of the family he cherished most. Born in Belmond, Iowa, to the late George and Blanche Aldrich, Danny was raised in Rowan, Iowa, and attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City before enlisting in the United States Navy. He trained as a helicopter pilot, rose to the rank of Lieutenant, and served as the Admiral's personal helicopter pilot with missions across Europe, the North Pole, and Antarctica. Honorably discharged in 1967, Danny joined Trans World Airlines (TWA) as a commercial pilot, retiring in 1996 after a remarkable 29-year career—with Honolulu as his favorite layover, where he loved hiking Diamond Head.

In 1957, a blind date at Babes Pizzeria in Des Moines, Iowa, changed Danny's life forever. He married Mary Kay in 1961, beginning 64 years of shared adventures. Together, the family drove the Alaska Highway in Danny's customized Border Patrol van turned camper, aka “The Kramper, explored national parks in Utah and California, and returned time and again to one of his favorite places, Hawaii.

Beyond the cockpit, Danny poured his creativity into building and renovating homes and opened his heart to dozens of beloved dogs over the years. He found his greatest joy in time spent with family—gathered around the dinner table, working on a project, or simply enjoying a quiet evening at home. Danny lived a rich, full, and extraordinary life and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Kay; their children, Anne, Jeanne, and Todd. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Blanche Aldrich, his siblings, Bill, Jean, and Tom, and his daughter Patty.

A memorial service will be held in his honor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Danny's name to the charity of your choice.
