Obituary


Darrell “Red” Francis, 81, of Britt, Iowa passed away March 2, 2010 at the Hancock Memorial Hospital in Britt, Iowa.

Funeral services for Darrell Francis will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Ewing Funeral Chapel 178 Center Street West in Britt with Rev. Brian Dellaert officiating.  Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Britt.  Military graveside services will be conducted by the Britt VFW and American Legion Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 5, 2010 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West, in Britt and continue one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Darrell Franklin Francis, the son of Frank and Vernal (Indvik) Francis was born October 22, 1928 in Garner, Iowa.  He attended Britt Schools before joining the United States Army in 1946.

Red was united in marriage with Irene Appelhons on October 16, 1948 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Britt.  The couple made their home in Corpus Christi, Texas for a time before returning to Britt.

Red was employed by the United States Post Office and the bowing alley in Britt.  He later worked as a self employed painter for many years, retiring in 2004.

Red enjoyed spending time with his family especially his three granddaughters.  He also enjoyed playing cards, bowling, hunting, boating and fishing and times at the cabin in Faribault, Minnesota.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Britt.  Red was also an American Legion and VFW member.  He was a founding member and past president of the West Hancock County Ambulance Service, served on the Britt Fire Department and was a past Britt City Council member.

Red is survived by two children: Diane Francis of Britt and Jim (Tina) Francis and their daughters: Courtney, Callie and Cara all of Britt; one brother, Duane Francis of Britt and several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Irene; son Donald Paul Francis; his parents; stepmother Emma Clark and stepsister Donna Bundy.
