Obituary


Delbert Fern Mitchell, 89, of Britt passed away Friday, May 5, 2006 at Westview Care Center in Britt.

Delbert, the son of Daniel and Lyda (Fulks) Mitchell was born April 10, 1917 in Ware, Iowa.  He moved with his family to Missouri and later returned to Iowa via a covered wagon.

Delbert was united in marriage with Anna Margaretha Reiter on March 25, 1939 in Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Delbert was employed by the Iowa State Highway Commission as a road maintenance operator.  He retired in 1979 after serving 32 years in Spirit Lake, Waterloo, and Cedar Falls.

He also enjoyed doing handyman jobs for tourist in Spirit Lake, building docks, mowing yards and raking leaves.

In 1986 he became an ordained minister and served as speaker for numerous Men's Full Gospel Fellowship meetings.  He and Margaret also enjoyed singing and providing music for nursing homes.  He attended the Nazarene Church in Britt and enjoyed the discussions in the Adult Sunday School Class.

Delbert is survived by three children: Kenneth (Fern) of Coleridge, Nebraska, Jeanette (Robert) McCann of Hooseston, Illinois, David (Olivia) of Britt, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; brother Edgar Mitchell of Sutton, Nebraska and sister Marjorie Northrup of Ottumwa, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Margaret; son Edgar; daughter Ruth; and three brothers Frances, Luther, Adrian.
