Obituary


Diane E. (Holck) Smith, 77, of Belmond passed away Saturday, July 20, 2019 at MercyOne North Iowa Hospice in Mason City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 26, 2019 at 10:30 AM at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 1207 3rd Street North East in Belmond, with Father Nils Hernandez and Father Jerry Blake concelebrating. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

A Rosary and Scriptural Wake Service will be held on Thursday, July 25, 2019 at 4:30 PM, with visitation to follow until 7:00 PM, at Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South in Belmond.

Diane Elizabeth, the eldest daughter of Henry and Norma (Haaf) Holck was born December 17, 1941 in Britt, Iowa. She attended and graduated from Corwith-Wesley High School with the class of 1959 and attended the Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

Diane worked in banking her entire career, beginning at Cedar Falls Trust and Savings, then later to Merchant National Bank in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines before finishing her career with Banks of Iowa in Cedar Rapids.

Diane was united in marriage to Marvin Smith on January 7, 1983 in Cedar Rapids. The couple made their home in Hiawatha, Cedar Rapids and Solon. Diane and Marvin enjoyed going on a number of fishing trips to Minnesota, Missouri and Canada.

Following Marvin’s death, Diane moved to Goodell and then to Belmond. She enjoyed playing 500, 500 Rummy and Cribbage with others in the apartments. She was an avid sports fan, especially when it came to the Hawkeyes, Cubs and Twins.

Diane’s strong Catholic faith was central to her life. She was a longtime member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond and served as regent of the local Catholic Daughters #1290. She prayed the Rosary daily and enjoyed reading books and watching Catholic television programs.

Diane will be remembered for her strong faith and love of her family. She had a particularly special bond with her niece and nephew and loved family gatherings. The entire extended family had a very special Christmas together this past year.

Diane is survived by her brother Lee (Regina) Holck of Belmond, sister Jill (David) Kent of Woodbury, Minnesota; niece Heidi (JP) Kent-Mack and their son Lincoln of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, nephew Adam Kent of West St. Paul, Minnesota; step-son Craig (Sarah) Smith and family of Ankeny and brother-in-law Verlan (Klista) Smith and family of Sparta, Missouri; along with numerous other family members and friends.

Diane was preceded in death by her parents, husband Marvin Smith in 1999 and brother Dick Holck in 2012.
