Obituary


Donald E. Carpenter, 91, of Britt, passed away Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at Westview Care Center in Britt.

Visitation for Donald Carpenter will be held from 4:00 – 6:00 PM on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at Ewing Funeral Home, 178 Center Street West in Britt.

Donald Eugene Carpenter was born March 9, 1931 to Lloyd and Lenora (Shelton) Carpenter at the family farm north of East Twin Lake in rural Kanawha. He was raised and educated in Kanawha and graduated from Kanawha High School.

Following high school, Don served with the United States Army during the Korean War, honorably discharged in 1953.

Don was united in marriage to Linda Modderman on March 24, 1962. Children are Bob, Carlene, Joyce, Michael and Gene. The couple made their home in Goodell, Britt and Redwood Falls, Minnesota before moving to Sun City, Arizona, where they made their home for 40 years before returning to Britt in 2017.

Don worked a variety of jobs over the years, including at General Mills in Belmond, Ris Van Fertilizer, with the Britt Police Department, eventually serving as Police Chief, at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, operating the Honda and Skidoo Dealership in Redwood Falls and working as sales manager of Desert Golf Cars in Sun City before retiring after 17 years.

Don was an avid sports fan, he loved bowling, playing golf and racquetball, and any number of outdoor motor sports, including stock car racing, snowmobiling, motorcycling, 4 wheeling on the sand dunes and trails in Arizona and riding in the side by side and Jeep.

Don and Linda enjoyed traveling to many states throughout the U.S., as well as memorable trips to Mexico and Banff, Canada, either on motorcycle or in the motorhome. The couple made frequent return trips to Iowa in the summers and had a number of miniature Schnauzers over the years, most recently, Maggie.

Don was a consummate family man, was always there for his children, instilled in them his strong work ethic and his tireless pursuit of excellence.

Don is survived by his wife, Linda, of Britt; children Bob (Bobbie) Carpenter of Garner, Carlene (David) Meyer of Britt, Joyce (Mark) Matern of Britt, Michael Carpenter of Sun City, Arizona and Gene Carpenter of Arizona; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; along with extended family members and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, his grandson Jeremy Dolphin and his siblings Zeola Seagren and Merril Carpenter.
