Donna Delores Dobbs was born July 3, 1940, in Van Nuys, California to Larmon and
Leona (Taylor) Dobbs. Her family moved to Oakland, Iowa where she was raised
and educated, graduating from Oakland High School with the class of 1958. Donna
played basketball and got the opportunity to play in the state tournament in
1955 and 1956. Following high school, Donna attended Nebraska Methodist Nursing
School in Omaha and began her 41 year career working as a registered nurse.
Donna was united in marriage to Jack Fisher on August 3, 1963 at the United
Methodist Church in Oakland. To this union, children Chris and Shelly were born.
While residing in Oakland, Donna continued her nursing career and Jack was a
teacher and coach.
In 1974, Donna and the family moved to Britt, Iowa where Jack became the high
school principal and Donna went to work at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in
Britt. She eventually became Charge Nurse on the 3pm-11pm shift, and later
became Head of Risk Management before retiring in 2002. Donna loved what she
did, and that was so evident to both her colleagues and her patients.
Donna and Jack loved traveling together. They made many trips north to Canada to
fish, and then headed south for the winter for 22 years to the warmth of
Weslaco, Texas. They also were Red Wing collectors and attended the annual Red
Wing Collectors Society Convention in Minnesota regularly. Years ago, Jack and
Donna owned a racehorse and frequented the Nebraska Circuit where they cheered
on both their own horse and her in-laws' horses. Donna also enjoyed her
out-of-state visits to family, and being able to attend various activities and
events of her grandchildren. She loved her kids and grandkids very much.
Donna was a faithful Christian and a longtime member of the United Methodist
Church in Britt. She loved a good cup of coffee and great conversations with her
friends and family. She also was involved in the Red Hat Society, and loved
playing bridge with a variety of clubs and friends over the years. Until the
last couple of years, Donna could be found at her favorite casino taking big
risks on the penny and nickel machines. Those worked out for her a time or two.
Donna is survived by her husband, Jack Fisher of Britt; son Chris (Sandy) Fisher
of Basehor, Kansas; daughter Shelly (Mike) Hulverson of Monument, CO;
grandchildren Zach, Nick, and Sami Fisher, and Kayley, Ethan, and Evan
Hulverson. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Ella of Omaha, and many
nieces and nephews and other extended family members and friends.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents and her parents-in-law Frank and
Frances Fisher, her stepmother Mildred Dobbs, her sister Marie Johnk, her
brother-in-law Don Johnk, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dick and Gelena
Clipson, her nephew Rick Clipson, and her nephew-in-law Barry Rue.
