Obituary


Doris L. Abels, 85, of Kanawha, passed away Monday, August 4, 2014, at the Kanawha Community Home in Kanawha.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, August 9, 2014, at Wright Christian Reformed Church, 1726 East 130th Street in rural Kanawha, with Pastor Daniel Lindley officiating.   

Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday, August  8, 2014, at Ewing Funeral Home, 118 East 2nd Street in Kanawha, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Doris Louise (Daggett) Abels was born February 23, 1929 to Roy and Elsie (Bowman) Daggett in Clarion.  She attended and graduated from Clarion High School.

Doris was united in marriage to Earnest W. Abels on March 27, 1948 in Clarion.  The couple made their home on a farm west of Kanawha.  In 1977, Doris and Earnest moved in to Kanawha.

Doris worked as a nurse’s aid at the Kanawha Community Home for more than 30 years where the residents and coworkers became part of her extended family.

Doris loved cats, and kept many of them as pets over the years.  Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren: babysitting them, going on road trips and picnics, and teaching them to bake.  Doris also enjoyed garage sales.

Doris was a longtime member of Wright Christian Reformed Church.

Doris was very kind hearted and would do anything for someone in need.  She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Doris is survived by her children, Michael (Donna) Abels of Kanawha, William (Tina) Abels of Carlsbad, New Mexico and Dan (Maureen) Abels of Kanawha; grandchildren Stacey (Dave) Meeuwsen and their children Elizabeth, Samantha and Noah of Sioux Center, Angela (Dwayne) Capper and their children Emily, Erin, Allison, Zachary and Conner of Solon, Jessica (Darryl) Abelscroft of London, England, and Tasha Raghbun and her son William of Carlsbad, New Mexico; sisters-in-law Dorothy Berleen and Rosemond Abels; brothers-in-law Dick Abels and Eugene (Dorothy) Abels; along with numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Earnest in 1992; brothers Gene (Iola) and Donald (Doris) Daggett; sister-in-law Esther Abels; and brothers-in law Richard Berleen and Junior Abels.
