Obituary


Dorothy Smith, 88, of Britt, passed away Thursday, August 25, 2011, at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Memorial services for Dorothy Smith will be held on Monday, August 29, 2011, at 10:30 am at the United Methodist Church in Britt with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. Inurnment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 28, 2011, from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West, in Britt and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Dorothy Lucille, the daughter of Herbert Nelson and Mary Maxon, was born June 4, 1923 in Iowa City. As a young girl, she moved to Britt where she attended school. Later, Dorothy cleaned houses and did other household chores for various families in the community.

On November 11, 1940, Dorothy married Harold Weiland. The couple farmed and made their home near Britt, where they raised their children. In the 1970s, they moved to Britt and operated the Pennywise Shop. Harold passed away January 31, 1990.

On March 21, 1992, Dorothy married Charles Smith the couple made their home in Britt. They enjoyed traveling and spending time with family.

Dorothy was a member of the United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed teaching Sunday school. She was a member of Rebekah’s Lodge, and was active in several community service groups including 4-H. She enjoyed reading the newspaper, doing needlework, and gardening. Dorothy was a loving and caring person who enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s programs.

Dorothy is survived by her husband Charles of Britt; son Darrell (Jeanene) Weiland of Bentonville, Arkansas; son Larry (Terri) Weiland of Decatur, Arkansas; daughter Esta Hengesteg and her significant other Denny Reyerson of Northwood; stepdaughters: Connie (Marlyn) Root of Dows, Cathy (Lino) Padilla of Muscatine, and Carmen Smith of Britt; 10 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; two half sisters along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Harold Weiland.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Britt Area Food Bank and/or the West Hancock Ambulance Service.
