Obituary
Douglas Jacobsen, 85, of Dows, passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2025 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
Memorial visitation will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 PM on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at Ewing Funeral Home, 114 East Ellsworth Street in Dows.
Private family graveside will be held.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the charity of your choice.
Douglas “Doug” P. Jacobsen was born on October 4, 1939 to Harley Thorvald Jacobsen and Ruby Idella (Cowley) Jacobsen in Hampton, Iowa. Doug lived on the home place for 85 years in Dows.
Doug attended school in Dows and graduated with the class of “1958.” After graduation, he worked for a short time at Farmers Hybrid in Hampton. After the accidental death of his brother, Galen, Doug returned home to farm.
On June 4, 1961, Doug married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Colnes. They became the proud parents of Julie Ann, Janelle Kay, and Corey Lynn. Doug and Carolyn followed the children’s activities.
Doug was an excellent farmer. He could figure out and fix almost every problem on the farm. Doug was quiet in his ways.
Doug and Carolyn spent 25 winters wintering in Arizona. Doug enjoyed the warm sun and meeting many new friends. In 2023, Doug and Carolyn moved to Ames.
Doug is survived by his wife Carolyn of Ames; children Julie (Cary) Halfpop of Des Moines, Janelle Jacobsen of Des Moines, and Corey (Kim) Jacobsen of Dows; grandchildren Trey Halfpop, Brady Halfpop, Kelby Halfpop, Ben (Frances) Jacobsen, Matthew Jacobsen, and Caleb Jacobsen; great-grandchildren Theo Halfpop, Tru Halfpop, and Scarlett Jacobsen; sister Shirley (Marvin) Zaiger; sister-in-law Cathleen Richards; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Harley and Ruby Jacobsen; in-laws Eddie and Emma Colnes; brother Galen Jacobsen; sisters and brothers-in-law Vivian (Phil) Kinsey and Ardis (Virgil) Lemke; and brother-in-law Robert Richards.
