Duane A. Burger, 85, of Fort Dodge, passed away into his Savior's loving arms on Saturday, June 20, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services for Duane Burger will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 11, 2020 at Britt Evangelical Free Church, 810 2nd Avenue North West in Britt. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Visitation for Duane Burger will be held one hour prior to the funeral services at the church on Saturday morning. Duane's wife of 62 years, Janice, died on April 3, 2020. He is survived by his children Tammy (Brian) Ball of Fort Dodge, Troy (Mary Beth) Burger, of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, and Melody (Ferruccio) Zampa, of Fort Dodge; 5 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and siblings Bev Lewis, Mary Lou Biggins, Shirley Schultz, Judy Peterson and Tom Burger. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Vienna Burger; a son, Gregory; and a sister, Carol Schroeder. Duane Arthur Burger was born on a farm near Paton, Iowa on August 8, 1934. After helping on the farm and graduating from Paton High School, he joined the Army during the Korean War. He worked as a mechanic in the Army and as a civilian. He also worked for the railroad and on February 15, 1958, married Janice Newton. They made their home in Fort Dodge shortly after and he began working for United States Gypsum. He retired from USG in 1999. Duane had a full life with his family, work, and serving the Lord. He and his wife helped charter the First Evangelical Free Church in Fort Dodge in 1965 and was a faithful member for many years, holding positions in the church and evangelizing in the community. In the 1980's he became ill when his heart contracted a virus. He finally got to the point of needing a heart transplant and on June 26, 2003, he received one after only being on the list for three days. He lived almost 17 years after that and kept active until his last bout of skin cancer. He lived to serve others and to spread the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. He was attending First Covenant Church in Fort Dodge, at the time of his death. The family would like to thank the staff of Fort Dodge Health and Rehabilitation for their excellent care of Duane. Memorials may be left to the discretion of Duane's children and Ewing Funeral Home in Britt is serving the family.
