Elizabeth C. 'Bette' Helgevold, 96, passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2017, in
the loving care of her three children. There will be no services held at this
time. She was born to L.C. Smith and Vesta Conger Smith in St. Louis Park,
Minnesota. She was united in marriage to Arthur Helgevold on July 27, 1941.
Together they farmed in Eagle Grove, Iowa from 1941 until his death in 1976.
She lived in Vero Beach, Florida for 27 years before moving home to Iowa. Bette
is survived by her three children, Barbara (Leonard) Smith of Palm Bay, Florida;
Bonnie (John) Misiak of Port Charlotte, Florida; and Douglas (Carolyn) Helgevold
of Eagle Grove, Iowa; her eight grandchildren, one step-grandson, 14
great-grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren and her brother, Walter S.
(Emily) Smith of Greenville, Tennessee. Some of Bette's proudest accomplishments
include her work with Concerned Inc. in Eagle Grove; her work at the Eagle Grove
Public Library; her volunteer work at the Indian River Medical Center in Vero
Beach, Florida; and tutoring Vero Beach elementary students. Bette was a beloved
family member, a dear friend, avid reader, feminist and competitive card
player. She led us all by example, exemplifying Philippians 4:8; to fix your
thoughts on whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just and worthy
of praise. It seems appropriate that Bette passed into glory at Thanksgiving.
Should friends desire, memorials to the Eagle Grove Library will always be
appreciated.
