Obituary


Elizabeth ‘Betty’ (McLaughlin) Cook, 88, of Belmond passed away Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa in Mason City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 19, 2018 at 11:00 AM at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 1207 3rd Street North East in Belmond, with Father Jerry Blake officiating. Burial will take place at Amsterdam Cemetery in Goodell.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 18, 2018 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South in Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Betty was born December 20, 1929 in Belmond, the daughter of John (Jack) and Margaret (Blair) McLaughlin of Belmond. She graduated from Belmond High School in 1947 and attended nurses training in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She was united in marriage to Phillip Cook on December 29, 1949 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Belmond. Betty and Phil made their home in Emmons, Minnesota for a short time and then moved to Northwood, Iowa where they spent some of their happiest years raising their five children. They returned to Belmond in 1975.

Betty is survived by her five children: JoAnne (Allan) Kappmeyer of Clear Lake, Nancy Watrud of Littleton, New Hampshire, Stephen (Judy) Cook of Stillwater, Minnesota, Susan Balduf of Nevada, Iowa and Charles (Monica) Cook of Belmond; brothers: J. Joe (Ramona) McLaughlin of Belmond, Stephen (Sharon) McLaughlin of Belmond; sisters: Gertrude (Ralph) Bormann of Humboldt, Ruth (James) Aldrich of Belmond; brother-in-law, Jerome Minnihan of Missouri; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren plus one on the way, numerous family and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Phil, in 1985; brother, James and his wife, Edith McLaughlin; sister, Carmen Minnihan; and infant sister, Margaret Mary.
