Obituary
Elzo Lewerke, 89, of Britt, Iowa passed away Monday, October 9, 2006 at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, Iowa.
Elzo, the son of Harm and Jennie (Mulder) Lewerke, was born on April 7, 1917 in Parkersburg, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Yvonne Stratton on November, 28, 1938. From this union were born five children, Diane (Bill) Kafer of Manly, Curtis (Julie) Lewerke of Clear Lake, Dennis (Jodie) Lewerke of Macon City, Ruth (Jay) Newman of Kensett, and Jonathan (Jo Ellen) Lewerke of Mason City.
During the war, he worked in a factory making shells for the armed forces, later went into farming, owned and operated a locker in Ottosen, Iowa, then returned to farming in the '50's. In the 60's, he began his construction career.
November 8, 1981, he was united in marriage to Betty Ann (Steven) Dee in Algona, Iowa. He was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church in Britt, Iowa. He accepted the Lord as his personal Savior at an early age. He loved working with children as well as with adults within his community Betty Ann and Elzo raised buffalo, llamas, wallabies, as well as exotic deer and birds up until they moved into the town of Britt. One of Elzo and Betty Ann' s highlights of their lives together was a special trip to Israel.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Ann his five children and their spouses, 17 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, four sisters: Susan McClain, Jennie (Lynn) Forshee, Rosie Brunsen, and Eileen (Cliff) Smith, one brother, Jake (Ethel) Lewerke, two sisters-in-law Eula Lewerke and Arlyss Steven, two brothers-in-law Harvery (Pauline) Steven and Loren L. (Beverly) Steven and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harm and Jennie Lewerke, mother of his children, Yvonne (Stratton) Lewerke, two sisters: Gertrude Smidt and Ella Bergman, two brothers: Harm and Pete Lewerke, five brothers-in-law: Bud Smidt, Henry Brunsen, John Bergman, Ronaold McClain and Neil Steven, one sister-in-law, Viola Lewerke and one granddaughter, Kristi Ann Lewerke.
