Obituary


Emma Pauline Rhoads, 93, passed away Thursday, December 14, 1995 at the Kanawha Community Nursing Home.

Emma, the daughter of Charles and Paulina (Zuehl) Hartwig was born Septemeber 5, 1902 near Kanawha, Iowa.  She graduated from high school in Kanawha and teachers college in Iowa Falls, Iowa.  Emma taught in the Kanawha area schools.

On February 19, 1927, she was united in marriage with Wayne Rhoads at her parents home. The couple farmed in the Kanawha and Britt area until November 1948.  She moved into Kanawha in 1950 and was employed at the Jack Sprat Grocery Store and Local cafe's until she retired.  Emma enjoyed crocheting, making quilts, reading, and visiting with relatives and friends.  She has been a resident of the Kanawha Community Home since 1985.  Emma was a member of the Kanawha Methodist Church.

Survivors include her son Harold and his wife, Gloria of Kanawha; two daughters: Betty Miller and her husband, Robert of Gravois Mills, Missouri; Ruby Carlson and her husband, Floyd of Lone Rock, Iowa; nine grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Emma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1948, one infant daughter, one brother, Oscar Hartwig, three sisters: Clara Muhm, Ella Asche and Lena Cooper, and a son-in-law, Merle Jordanger.
