Obituary


Ernest “Ernie” Joseph Malek, 90, of Britt passed away Monday, April 6, 2015 at Westview Care Center in Britt.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Ernest Malek will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at 10:30 AM at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, 2343 Navy Avenue in Duncan with Father Dennis Miller officiating.  Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Duncan.

Visitation for Ernest Malek will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with a Catholic Workman Rosary beginning at 7:00 PM followed by a Scriptural Wake Service.   

Ernest Joseph Malek was born February 23, 1925 on a farm near Duncan, Iowa.  He was the son of George and Antonia (Fiala) Malek.  He was the sixth of seven children.  Ernie was a 1942 graduate of Hayfield High School.  After graduation, he worked on his brother’s farm for 3 years, before serving his country in Korea.  In 1948 he began farming and did part time carpenter work.  In 1977 he retired from his farming but continued carpenter work full time.

He was united in marriage to Clara Drabek on April 29, 1947 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan, Iowa.

His strong faith was a great example to all those who loved him.  He enjoyed working in his shop, fishing, dancing, Czech music and reminiscing about old times.  He especially enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ernest was a life-long member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.  He was a member of the Catholic Workman, and American Legion.

His family wishes to express their thanks and appreciation to caring staff at Westview Care Center and caregivers of Hospice of North Iowa.

Ernie is survived by his children, Darlene Edington of Talihina, Oklahoma, Edwin Malek (Elaine) of Knoxville, Gary Malek (Mary)  of Garner, Marvin Malek (Cheryl) of Garner, Beverly Roberts of Cary, North Carolina and Diane Hansen (Dann) of Kanawha and daughter-in-law Bev Malek of Britt; 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, one sister Theresa Suby and one sister-in-law Alice Malek.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Clara, two brothers, three sisters, son Duane Malek, grandson Brent Malek, two sons-in-law Bill Edington and Dr. John Roberts.
