Obituary

Fay Elwin Bird, 80, passed away Thursday, April 23, 1998, at his home in Britt, Iowa.

Fay, the son of Harry and Ellen (Phillips) Bird, was born December 10, 1917, near Woden, Iowa.  He attended rural school in Woden Township.  Fay entered the military service, serving during World War II in France and Germany.  He was also involved in the Battle of the Bulge.  Fay was wounded in combat and received the Purple Heart.  After his discharge, Fay worked as a self-employed trucker for a number of years.  He was united in marriage with Velma Dolphin in 1947.  The couple made their home in Britt.  Fay was associated with the Hy-Cross Chick Company, until poor health forces him to retire.  Some of his favorite pastimes were spent tinkering on his trucks, and spending time with his family, especially his three grandchildren.  Fay was a member of the American Legion.  A couple of years ago he received the Citation of the Battle of Normandy Award from the French Government at a ceremony in Mason City, Iowa.

Fay is survived by his wife, Velma; his son, Roger and his wife, Yvonne; three grandchildren: Shannon, Amy and Joey; a sister: Muriel Brunsen and her husband, Herb.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Cliff, Kenny, and Leonard and one sister, Ramona.
