Florence Chaffer (Duncan) Smith, the daughter of David and Clara (Chaffer)
Duncan, was born at Kanawha, Iowa, June 24, 1901. She was youngest in a family
of six daughters.
Florence graduated from Kanawha Public Schools and attended Ellsworth College at
Iowa Falls, Iowa. She then taught in rural schools near Kanawha, Stilson and
Corwith.
On April 14, 1925, she was united in marriage to Jesse G. Smith of Britt, Iowa.
The couple farmed in the Kanawha area for many years, retiring and moving to
Britt, Iowa, in 1967. Mr. Smith died in 1978 and Mrs. Smith continued to live
in her home in Britt. She was a member of the Kanawha Methodist Church and the
American Legion Auxiliary.
Florence passed away September 29, 1994, at the Hancock Memorial Hospital in
Britt, at the age of 92 years, following an extended illness.
Florence Smith is survived by her three sons and their wives: W. David and
Calene Smith, Kanawha; Eugene and Marcene Smith, Humboldt; Paul and Marlene
Smith, Britt. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, nine
great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jesse, and five sisters:
Jessie, Mrs. William Norby; Estella, Mrs. J.B. Johnson; Nellie, Mrs. John
Hovalnd; Amelia, who died in infacny; and Myrtle, Mrs. Clarence Jordanger.
