Gary L. Gordon, 58, died January 27, 2015 at his residence south of Rowan.
Services were held January 31, 2015 at the United Church of Rowan. Burial was in
Graceland Cemetery near Rowan.
Gary Lee was born May 30, 1956 to Lloyd and Julia Bell Gordon. He was baptized
and confirmed at the Rowan United Church of Christ. Gary attended school in
Rowan, then Belmond, graduating in 1974. Gary was employed by Cargill in Rowan
before earning a degree at North Iowa Area Community College. He became a
tractor mechanic for Snyder Implement in Dows and at Helland and Long Implement
in Belmond. He felt his job as a mechanic was affecting his hearing, so he
became an employee of the United States Postal Service, first in Pella, then in
Ames, retiring in August 2013.
Gary was never married, but loved his dogs Bear, Kelly and Rex. They were his
"kids".
Gary will be remembered for his big heart and daredevil attitude. If you needed
something, he was there for you. He started out at a young age with a go-cart,
racing around the yard and out into the road when Mom supposedly wasn't looking.
That led to a dirt bike and jumping ditches, and at last a Harley Davidson
motorcycle. He was known to make the skid loader pop wheelies going down the hog
building floor. In his early 30's he was an avid bicycle rider. He rode on
RAGBRAI many times, getting in shape by riding his bike to Clear Lake on his way
to work in Belmond. Gary was active in Boy Scouts and 4-H while growing up. He
was a free spirit.
He was preceded in death by his father Lloyd, and his grandparents.
Gary is survived by his mother Julia of Belmond; brother Vern (Sally) of
Belmond; sister Kathryn (Gary) Nielsen of Rowan; nieces Angie Pacha, Sarah
Nielsen and Aimee Mellein; and nephews Corey Nielsen and Adam Gordon.
