Obituary


Gaylen Derold Johnson, 76, of Kanawha, passed away Monday, January 24, 2000, at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 26, 2000, at 1:30 PM at the Lutheran Church in Kanawha, Iowa, with Pastor Keith Sievers officiating. Burial will be in the Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha. 

Visitation will be Tuesday, January 25, 2000 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Home in Kanawha and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.  

Gaylen was born on February 27, 1923, to Carolton and Adina (Hefte) Johnson on a farm west of Belmond.  He attended country school.

On November 6, 1943, he was married to Delores Sturgeon in Belmond.  He worked at Farmers Grain Company and for the City of Belmond and then moved west of Kanawha, where he farmed for 14 years.  Then he worked at Winnebago Industries for four years and as parts manager at Broshar Implement until retirement.  Gaylen was an active member of Kanawha Lutheran Church.  He enjoyed bowling but his real love was to take Delores dancing.

Gaylen is survived by two daughters, Angela Strege and her husband, Kevin of Bakersfield, California and Andrea Mallen of Mason City and her special friend, Denny Honsey, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; one son Todd Johnson of Buffalo Center; one daughter-in-law Sherry Johnson of Kanawha; five grandchildren, Travis and his wife, Sue of Grimes, Chad of West Des Moines and his fiancee, Steph of Belmond, Jade of Clinton, Mitchell of Buffalo Center, Jacey of Britt; one great-grandson Drew; three sisters, Edith Shahan and her husband, Stanley of Ames, Carol Christenson and her husband Earl of Forest City, and Wilma Friesleben of Belmond; three brothers, Dudley Johnson and his wife, Janice of Kanawha, Arland Johnson and his wife Barbara of St. Johns, Newfoundland; and many nieces and nephews.

Gaylen was preceded in death by his parents, wife Delores, Thursday, January 20, 2000; one son, Tony Johnson, one great-grandson Jordan Chase Johnson, and two sisters, Laura Simon and Aileen Johnson.
