Genelle (Ruter) Assink, 95, of Kanawha, passed away Sunday, August 7, 2022 at
the Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Friday, August 12, 2022 at Kanawha
Christian Reformed Church, 129 E 3rd St, Kanawha. Burial will be at the
Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.
Genelle was born April 13, 1927 to Peter and Anna (Folkerts) Ruter, and she grew
up on a farm south east of Kanawha. She attended country school and graduated
from Kanawha High School.
Following her graduation, Genelle began her cleaning business, cleaning homes
and businesses in and around Kanawha for many years.
Genelle was united in marriage to Alfred Assink on August 14, 1947 in Kanawha.
To this union, children Sonja and Merlyn were born. The couple hosted coffee at
their home following church services on many Sundays.
Genelle was a life-long resident of the Kanawha area, and was a member of the
Kanawha Christian Reformed Church for her entire life. In August 2017 she became
a resident of the Kanawha Community Home.
Genelle was known to send greeting cards for any number of occasions. She also
enjoyed gospel and county music.
Genelle is survived by her children, Sonja Goetz of Mason City and Merlyn
(Barbara) Assink of Kanawha; grandchildren Matthew Assink of Kanawha, Brandon
(Renee) Assink and their children Dawson and Drew of Grimes, and Angela (Ben)
Koester and their daughter Addison of Cedar Rapids; sister Berniece (Virgil)
Stahl of Belmond; along with nieces, nephews and other extended family and
friends.
Genelle was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alfred in 1994, and
her brother Harlan Ruter in 1950.
