Obituary


George "Dutch" Herbert Evans, Jr., 80, passed away Monday, June 16, 1997, at his home in Kanawha, Iowa.

Dutch, the son of George and Jennie (Frakes) Evans, was born February 5, 1917, in Woolstock, Iowa.  As a young man, he moved with his parents to Corwith.  He attended school in Corwith graduating from Corwith High School in 1936.  After graduation he played semi-pro baseball in Des Moines and Fairbury, Nebraska.  Dutch entered the U.S. Navy in 1941 where he served with the submarine division.  On June 3, 1941, he was united in marriage with Maxine Thompson in Lancaster, Missouri.  He returned to the service and served until his discharge in 1947.  Dutch and Maxine made their home in Kanawha where he ran the Evans & Roblin Recreation Center with his brother.  He then worked for International Harvester in Kanawha until it closed, and then at Helland & Long in Belmond until his retirement.

Dutch liked to bowl and go camping. He especially enjoyed fishing with his brother-in-law, Howard.  He was also an avid sports fan, always cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes.  Over the years, he and Maxine enjoyed ballroom dancing.

Dutch was baptized and confirmed member of the Kanawha Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday School and served as as usher.  He was also a member of the Kanawha American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine; two daughters: Diane Rink and her husband, Don of Clarion, and their daughters, Rhonda and her husband, Dan Skinner and Nancy; Gail Poulsen and her husband, Ric of Spencer, and their children, Rob and Kari; three brothers: Harold and his wife, Cora Mae of Stanhope; John and his wife of Colorado; and Ed and his wife, Helen of Webster City.

Dutch was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers - Penry and Pete, and one sister - Lottie.
