Obituary


Gerald ‘Gary’ E. Rohrer of Clarion passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2018 at the age of 84.

Funeral Mass for Gary Rohrer will be held Thursday, August 23, 2018 at 10:30 AM at St. John’s Catholic Church, 608 2nd Avenue North East in Clarion with Father Jerry Blake officiating. Burial will be held at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Clarion.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Wednesday, August 22 at Ewing Funeral Home, 1801 Central Avenue East in Clarion, with a Rosary Service beginning at 4:30 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Gerald Eugene Rohrer was born April 14, 1934 in Clarion, Iowa to Harold and Della (Hilpipre) Rohrer. He attended Clarion Schools graduating in 1954. After graduation Gary enrolled in the United States Army serving in Germany for two years. In January 1957 he married Shirley Anderson at St. John’s Catholic Church in Clarion. They had four children, John, James, Susan and Joel.

After the Army, Gary worked for the ASCS office in Clarion. He went on to become the General Manager at the Holmes Farmer’s Coop Elevator. He retired from there in 1996 after 32 years.

During retirement Gary stayed busy as a volunteer driver for the VA Hospital transporting patients to Des Moines. As his wife Shirley’s health deteriorated, Gary devoted every minute to making sure that Shirley had what she needed to be comfortable at home, and later at the Care Center in Clarion. Gary visited Shirley there every day until her death in January 2017.

He was the past president of the Clarion Lions Club, a member of the Clarion Jaycees, being awarded their Boss of the Year Award in 1982. He was a past Commander of the American Legion, member of Clarmond Country Club and St. John’s Catholic Church.

Gary is survived by his sons John (Julie) Rohrer of Clarion, Iowa, James Rohrer of Los Angeles, California and Joel (Cassandra) Rohrer of Elkhart, Iowa; four grandchildren, Nicholas (Meggie) Rohrer of Altoona, Iowa, Jessica (Ryan) Nail of Panora, Iowa, Macoy Rohrer of Clarion, Iowa and Ava Rohrer of Elkhart, Iowa; four great-grandchildren, Kinlee Nail, Quinn Rohrer, Elsie Nail and Chloe Rohrer; and siblings Ed (Fritz) Rohrer of Dunwoody, Georgia, Duane (Carol) Rohrer of Mason City, Iowa, Diane (Gary) Dahlgren of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Caryl (Carol) Rohrer of Clarion, Iowa.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, wife Shirley, their daughter Susan, his brothers James, Francis and sister Mary Lois.
