Gerald (Gary) D. Hill, 68, of Clarion, passed away Monday, August 1, 2005 at
Wright Medical Center in Clarion, Iowa following an extended illness.
Memorial services for Gary Hill will be held Thursday, August 4, 2005 at 10:30
A.M. at St. John's Catholic Church in Clarion with Fr. Chris Podhajsky
officiating.
Gary was born on November 24, 1936 in rural Clarion to Bernard and Mary
(Reiland) Hill. After attending Clarion schools, Gary served in the U.S. Army
from 1955 through 1957.
Gary married Elsie Boyer on September 6, 1958 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in
Dalton Nebraska. He worked at Wright County Implement until he bought the Sears
Catalog Store in Clarion in 1965 and operated it until 1993. He currently owned
and operated Gary's Laundry.
Gary very much enjoyed driving a school bus for the Clarion-Goldfield Schools
during his retirement. He received the Clarion Distinguished Service Award in
1976 and the Clarion Boss of the Year Award in 1978. Gary served on the Clarion
Volunteer Fire Department from 1961 to 1981 and served for a time on the City
Council. Gary enjoyed his morning and afternoon tea-Times with friends, and he
enjoyed spending time with his many grandkids most of all.
Gary is survived by his wife, Elsie of Clarion; his daughters Susan (Joe) Hulne
of Altoona, Lauri Demetres of Glendale, AZ, Nicole (David) Toerber of Lone
Tree, CO; his sons, Harlan (Carolyn) Hill of Fort Collins, CO, and David
(Rhonda) Hill of Clarion; sixteen grandchildren; sisters, Lorine Meyer of
Clarion, Pat (Keith) Mickelson of Eagle Grove; brother Bob (Donna) and of
Clarion; and sister-in-law Bonnie Hill of Grundy Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenny; and brother-in-law
Clair Meyer.
