Obituary


Gertrude Elaine Hartwig, 70, passed away Friday, February 19, 1999 at her home in Kanawha, Iowa.

Gert, the daughter of Boyd and Ella (Eekhoff) Ruter, was born July 1, 1928 on a farm near Kanawha.  She attended and graduated from the Kanawha Community School.

Gert was united in marriage with Jim Hartwig on October 21, 1947 at the Wright Christian Reformed Church.  After their marriage the couple made their home on a farm near Kanawha.  Later they would move into Kanawha.  The couple owned and operated "The Shed" for nearly 23 years.  During that time, they catered noon lunches to the employees of Kiefer Built.  Gert was a member of the Kanawha United Methodist Church.  She enjoyed shopping, dining out, and loved to send "notes" to friends and family.

Gert is survived by daughter, Jodi Spieker and her husband, Dennis of Garner, Iowa; grandson Jason Spieker; Jilane Mitchell and her husband, Chad and their sons, Jacob and Chadwick Mitchell; daughter, Julie Jordan and her husband, Rick of Farmers Branch, Texas; grandsons, Kyle and Kling Jordan; son, Chris Hartwig of Kanawha, grandson, Shawn Hesley and his wife and two daughters, granddaughters Start and Candy Hartwig, Crystal Ramirez and her husband, Mondo, and their daughter, Magdalena; three brothers: Byron Ruter and his wife, Shirley of Kanawha; Roger Ruter and his wife, Diane of Springfield, Missouri and Clifford Ruter of Aurora, Missouri and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim, and one brother John.
