Grace (Van Hoorn) Kruger was born to Richard and Grace (Smidt) Van Hoorn on the family farm north of Wesley, Iowa on April 12, 1931.  She lost her mother at five weeks of age.  She was cared for by her Uncle Ed and Aunt Tina Luppen, Kanawha, Iowa, until she was old enough to return to the farm.  Shortly after her return home, the farmhouse burned down and she returned to the Luppens until a new house was built. Her father later married her step-mother, Hermina, who helped raise her. Grace graduated from Woden High School, and received her RN degree at Marshalltown, Iowa.  Her career started in the operating rooms at Park Hospital in Mason City. She began writing Bert, her husband-to-be, while he was in the Korean War.

Grace married Albertus K. Kruger on June 10, 1954 at the Woden Christian Reformed Church; they were married for 63 years.  Grace was a wonderful farm wife and mother to five children on the family farm.  She lived life simply and taught her children many life skills.  She was a great cook, seamstress, gardener, active in the church and lived out her faith daily.

She is survived by her husband, Bert of Britt, and their five children Denise (Ed) Aldeman of Iowa City, Iowa and their three sons: Mark (Abigail) of College Station, Texas, Michael (Carrie) of Davenport, Iowa, and David of Iowa City Iowa, Dennis (Deb) of Wesley and their children: Dawn (John) Stoakes of Dysart, Iowa, Darrin (Allison) of Wesley, Iowa, Darcy of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Daniel (Jaime) of Wesley, Iowa, Deloris (Jay) McCracken of Des Moines, Iowa and their sons: Kyle (Rebekah) of Lakeville, Minnesota, Kory (Jessica) of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Kody (Katie) of Waterloo, Iowa, Darla (Gary) Peters of Wesley, Iowa and their sons: Alex, Taylor (Courtney) and Tony all of Wesley, Iowa, and Doreen (DeWayne) Breen of Urbandale, Iowa and their sons: Ben (Shari) of West Des Moines, Iowa and Nathan (Stephanie) of Ankeny, Iowa; eight great-grandchildren; along with many nephews, nieces, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents and stepmother, her half-brothers: Peter and George Smidt, and half-sister Della Pommer.

We deeply appreciate your kindnesses, thoughts, and prayers as Grace’s health became a struggle.
