Obituary


Harold Raymond Higdon, 97, passed away Saturday, February 13, 1999 at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, Iowa.

Harold, the son of Shotwell and Malinda (Salstrom) Higdon, was born September 6, 1901 on a farm near Stilson, Iowa in Hancock County. He attended Boone Township Country School, Britt Community High School, and Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.

Harold was united in marriage with Minnie Fox on March 22, 1924.  Following their marriage the couple made their home in Britt where Harold was a carpenter for many years. Harold took great pride in making fine cabinets, and enjoyed flying his own airplane.  In the early 1900's he erected windmills on area farms, many of these windmills are still standing.  He was a very knowledgeable self-educated man.  Harold joined the Odd Fellows in 1922 and served as President of the Britt Community School Board from 1948 until 1952.

Harold is survived by four daughters: Marian Dingman and her husband, George of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, LaVon Larson and her husband, Arvin of Wesley, Iowa, Carmen Mower and her husband, Gene of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Shirley Nussbaum and her husband, Joe of Corsicana, Texas; two sons James and his wife, Esther of Britt, Iowa and Charles and his wife, Mavis of Redding, California; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and one brother, Paul and his wife, Daisy of Granger, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Minnie, on April 16, 1995, one infant son, and two brothers.
