Obituary


Harold O. Pommer, 89, of Britt passed away Friday, September 20, 2002, at North Iowa Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Harold, the son of George and Anna (Peters) Pommer, was born March 15, 1913 on a farm north of Wesley.  He received his early education in Wesley Township and attended two years of high school in Wesley.

Harold farmed with his father before he was married.  He was united in marriage with Della Smidt of Kanawha, Iowa on December 15, 1938.  The couple farmed near Woden, and in 1943, moved to a farm 6 miles south of Woden in Orthel Township.  Harold retired from farming in 1979, and moved to Britt.

Harold was a baptized and confessing member of the Woden Christian Reformed Church, where he served as Sunday school teacher, usher, deacon, and elder.  In 1979, following their move to Britt the couple transferred their church membership from the Woden Christian Reformed Church to the Britt Christian Reformed Church.  Harold was a country school director at Orthel #2 for many years.

In his retirement years Harold enjoyed traveling with his wife Della and visiting with their children and grandchildren.  He was an active member of Britt Senior Citizens and received the Governor's Volunteer Award in 1991.

Harold is survived by his beloved wife Della, two daughters: Arlis and her husband Norman Ruter of Denver, Colorado and Beverly and her husband Bob Twistol of Orlando, Florida; three grandsons Greg and his wife Dana, Randy and his wife Sarah, and Scott and his wife Amy; two granddaughters Sarah and Christy and her husband, Maro; five great-grandchildren; one sister Hanna Mae Meyer of Woden; one sister-in-law Winifred Pommer of Pella; one step-sister Johnette Kayl of Oregon City, Oregon and many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents George and Anna Pommer, one sister Rosa Franzen, one brother Henry, one nephew Lloyd Pommer, step-mother Bertha Looft Pommer, step-sisters: Margaret Hinriksen and Grace DeWaard, and one step-brother Henry Looft.
